Who Can Adopt

  • Prospective parents whose homestudy has been approved by their provincial Ministry;  (if you are a relative of the child you wish to adopt, please go to Relative Adoption.)
  • Prospective parents must provide proof of Bangladeshi citizenship.
  • Prospective guardians must be at least 18 years old.
  • There is no legal requirement regarding marital status.
  • Prospective adoptive parents must be able to provide food, shelter, and education for the proposed ward.

Who Can Be Adopted

  • Children under the age of 16 whose biological parent(s) have signed an irrevocable release of the child before a Notary Public or Magistrate in Bangladesh.
  • Children who have been abandoned. (If the legal guardians are alive, they will have to relinquish their rights of guardianship.)

An application for legal guardianship must be made to the Family Court in
Bangladesh who has sole jurisdiction over family matters.  The adoption is finalized in Canada.
